2GS Update 3/31

Greetings 2GS Families! I hope everyone is having a great weekend. It surely was a beautiful day yesterday. Please note that I will be out tomorrow, Monday 4/1. Your children are aware and beloved substitute, Ms. Bankler has been assigned to cover this day. I look forward to returning to the classroom on Tuesday.

Please read below for many important updates.

Field TripGood news! There was a cancelation at the Wheelock Family Theater and so we will be able to attend James and The Giant Peach on April 23rd. Details about the trip will go out later this week.

Transition Update –Mrs. Crowley is in the final stages of identifying a teacher to cover my maternity leave. I have been working hard to set up materials and curriculum so that the last weeks of school continue to go smoothly for your children. I am hoping we will be able to share more details with you by the end of the week.

Please mark your calendars for Friday April 26th at 8:00.-I am hoping to have a gathering to celebrate all of the wonderful work your children have done this year in second grade before I depart. Your children have shown amazing growth this year and I am looking forward to us all coming together to recognize this. I will send further details in the coming weeks.

Nutrition and Digestion –We kicked off our study of the Digestive System on Monday. We began with the first stage, chewing. During this lesson students learned about the importance of chewing and saliva in the digestion process. Students munched on crackers to carefully identify what happens to foods while in the mouth. We learned that chewing signals the salivary glands to secrete saliva. As the teeth crunch food into smaller pieces, saliva mixes with food to create a bolus. The bolus is a ball of mashed of food that is ready to be swallowed. We also conducted investigations to explore how food travels down the esophagus and into the stomach. Students are carefully exploring the role of each part of the digestive system. Next week, we will study the importance of the small and large intestine and continue our way down the digestive system track.

Math- In math we have been busy working on our study of 2 and 3 digit addition with and without regrouping using the standard algorithm. This is a key learning expectation of second grade. I look forward to sharing your child’s progress in this area with you at our upcoming conferences.

Biography unit-We have wrapped up our biography unit. Students  worked hard on their biography reports. The research they did to produce these well written reports is truly impressive. Their reports are on display in our classroom and we hope to share them with you in the coming weeks. Students also chose a famous person that they read about to identify the “turning point” in a person’s life. We also discussed what would have happened if their life took a different path. For example, what would have happened if Barack Obama didn’t attend law school? Would he still have become president? Or what would have happened if Helen Keller didn’t learn from such a skilled teacher? Would she have ever learned to communicate with others? Ask your child about their “What if” poster and the discussions that we had.

Opinion WritingIn writing, we have launched our Opinion Writing unit and students have been writing letters to explain their opinion on the different books that they have been reading. Thus far, students have written about both their favorite part of a story and their favorite character. They are learning that a strong opinion piece states an opinion with evidence and reasoning. Throughout this unit students will state opinions clearly, retell their stories so that their opinions make sense to readers, and revise their letters before sending them out into the world. Lastly, students will also participate in a punctuation inquiry and then incorporate the conventions they are noticing in published books into their own writing.

Lastly.. I am looking forward to our upcoming conferences. If there is anything in particular that you would like to discuss that might require more thought or a consult with another teacher, please feel free to send me an email ahead of time.

2GS Update- New units, updates and important information! :)

It felt good to be back in the classroom this week after a week of rest and recharging. We were very busy launching a variety of different units across the curricular areas.

We dove into our Nutrition and Digestion unit this week. We began by studying nutrition, healthy eating, and the healthy food plate known as “My Plate”, formally the food pyramid. There are quite a bit of differences between the plate and the pyramid. It seems, that the plate promotes healthier food choices, portion control, and eating a variety of different types of foods from each food group. If you interested in learning more about My Plate you may visit ChooseMyPlate.gov. In 2GS this week, students read a variety of different books about the food plate, each food group and healthy eating. We worked together to sort different foods into the five food groups. We continued to talk about the benefits that the foods in each group have on our bodies. Currently, students are working on creating their own food plates. Using pictures of foods from magazines, students sorted foods into different categories, creating a delicious looking piece of art. They are working on doing research on the importance of eating a balanced diet and why we eat foods in each particular food group. This project will allow students to conduct research using a variety of different non-fiction texts, put their gathered information into paragraphs, edit, make revisions, and produce a final copy.

To help reinforce the importance of healthy eating and eating a balanced plate of food, 2GS will have a nutritious luncheon on Thursday March 14th. I will send out more details via “sign-up genius” sometime this week.

We also launched our biography unit this week. Students have been reading books about important people in history. Ask your children what they have learned about these people and what they have discovered about the biography genre.  Next week, students will begin to write their own biography reports. In lieu of the regular “Reading Log” homework, students will be asked to interview an adult (a parent, family member, member of the community) to write a biography on. I appreciate your support with this assignment.

I am also asking parents to write a short ( 1 paragraph-1 page) biography of their children. You can focus on one aspect of your children’s lives such as “Billy the Musician” or  write briefly about your child’s life until now. We will use these biographies as models for your children’s work. Students will love to listen to them during our writing workshop periods and they will help them to better understand the nature and purpose of biographies that they will write the following week.  Please include a topic sentence, sentences with interesting details, and a concluding sentence in your paragraphs. Pictures are welcome but not necessary. Please e-mail or hand in your biographies to me sometime next week. Please let me know if you have any questions.Good luck on your homework!

In math, we have been exploring two and three- dimensional figures. Students have explored two-dimensional figures and symmetry. We started our study by sorting figures according to different attributes. Our study then focused on polygons. Next week,  students will learn a variety of new vocabulary to explain the attributes of 3D figures. We will work to identify features of the figures, taking a closer look at the number of faces, edges, and vertices on each figure!

Updates

Our field trip to The Children’s Museum back in January was a great success. In second grade, we usually take a trip to The Wheelock Family Theater in the spring to see a performance. This year however when we called to make arrangements, we were informed that they were completely sold out, since October! Apparently, now that they are connected to BU, Wheelock is getting a lot more press and so this year ,we will unfortunately miss out. If you happen to have any ideas for a field trip in the Brookline community that connects to our curriculum,  please let me know. Second grade teachers are also brainstorming at this time. Thank you!

We are currently in need of the following items, thank you in advance for your donations.

  • Nut-free snacks
  • Plastic Forks and Spoons

Lastly, a pair of boots might have been taken home by mistake on Thursday afternoon. Please let me know if your child brought home a pair of boots that you don’t recognize.

2GS update, Important Information- please read!

I’m sure you heard that we had an amazing trip to the Children’s Museum last Wednesday. Students enjoyed continuing their learning in a real house from Kyoto, Japan. We also had tons of fun exploring the other exhibits throughout the museum. There are many pictures of our fun adventure posted on Instagram. Be sure to check it out!

We have an exciting week ahead as well. Please help your child prepare for our Japanese School day on Tuesday and Half-Way Day on Wednesday! I am reposting information below:

Japanese School Day

On Tuesday January 29th, 2GS will have a Japanese school day. In order for us to best simulate what a typical day is like in a Japanese school, please send your child with the following items:

  • Please send your child to school wearing a white shirt and blue pants. This is traditional uniform for children in Japan however nowadays, most students get to choose what they wear.
  • An extra pair of shoes-Upon arriving to school, your children will take off the shoes they wore outside, place them in their cubby and put on their “indoor” shoes.
  • A tooth brush-after lunch, all children will brush their teeth.
  • A rag to clean the classroom and school. Optional- a dustpan or small broom.
  • We are very fortunate that a few parents have offered to cook us a Japanese lunch that day so providing lunch for your child IS NOT NECESSARY. If your child is a selective eater, please know you can send them some food to eat AFTER the meal is over. I will be encouraging students to try what has been prepared. Often students report that this is “the best lunch” they have every eaten.

Menu:

Curry rice(vegetable curry)

Teriyaki chicken

Edamame

Carrot

Orange

(No milk,No nuts, No apple)

**In an effort to reimburse the parents who are so kindly buying and preparing the food for our class, we ask that you send in $3.00 with your child by TOMORROW, Monday 1/28**

Wednesday, January 30th – HALF WAY DAY!!!

In celebration of the 90th day of school (Half Way Day) we will partake in a variety of fun and engaging activities working with the fraction ½! This is a great connection to the fractions unit we are currently working on.

In the spirit of Half Way Day your children may choose to….

*Wear half day clothes and half pajamas

*Wear hair half up and half down

* Dye their hair ½ of one color

*Paint their nails two different colors

*Wear half dress clothes and half sports clothes

*Wear half of one pair of shoes and half of another pair

*Wear half winter clothes and half summer clothes

Be creative!

I also encourage you to have children bring snacks and lunches that are cut in halves. (foods cut In half or half of each item)This will be fun to see what kids come up with!

Half Way Day homework is due Wednesday as well!

I have had some inquiries about Valentines Day. We will have a small celebration for Valentine’s Day on Thursday, February 14th.  If your child wishes to bring in Valentines for their friends, please remember that they must bring one for EVERYONE in the class. Writing valentine cards is a great way for your children to practice handwriting and writing skills as well as further strengthen the 2GS community. I will send details about the day along with student’s names for cards next week.

Lastly, I had a conversation this week with a parent about Ms. Demsey’s current role in 2GS. Jill remains a very important part of 2GS. She joins us each day for word study and reading workshop. Her role however has shifted a bit so that she can also work in all of the other second grade classrooms for Writing Workshop. She is doing 8 week rotations  in each of the other classrooms and then will eventually make her way back to 2GS. We have timed it so that she will return in time for my anticipated maternity leave date (mid May). So yes, Ms. Demsey is teaching in 2GS less but she still remains an important part of our classroom community.

Enjoy this slightly warmer Sunday!

First update of 2019!

Greetings and Happy 2019!

As I am sure you have heard, we have excitedly continued our study of Japan in the New Year. We are very fortunate to have a many mini Japan “experts” that have been helping us along our journey. As we continue our study of Japan, we have planned a few fun and engaging activities that will further help second graders make connections between their lives and the lives of children in Japan.

This week we focused on learning more about the people of Japan. 2GS students learned about children in Japan and how their lives are both similar and very different to the lives they are living here in Boston. Students also discovered that geography greatly impacts the way people live their lives. We compared the lives of people living in more rural regions to those living in cities. We read the book This Place is Crowded by Vicki Cobb.  By reading this book, 2GS learned that Japan is as populated as Montana would be if half the people of the U. S. moved there. Life in Japan at home, school, and work was also described. The overriding pressure to conform and remain in harmony with people and nature is covered as well.  After reading, 2GS discussed how the people of Japan remain calm although there is so much going on around them. Perhaps at times we could all benefit from including some aspects of their lifestyle into ours in Boston. We also watched a video entitled Families of Japan that allowed students to view a day in the life of two Japanese children, one living on a farm and the other in the busy city of Tokyo.

See below for details on our exciting upcoming events:

FIELD TRIP: **MARK YOUR CALENDARS** We will visit the Boston Children’s Museum on Wednesday, January 23rd.  The children will enjoy a special tour of a traditional Japanese house in the Museum and have time to freely explore the other exhibits in small groups. If you volunteered to chaperone, I will let you know by Tuesday if your help is needed. For more information about this trip, please visit: http://www.bostonchildrensmuseum.org/exhibits-programs/exhibits/japanese-house

Japanese School Day

With that said, if your child is a selective eater, you may want to send them with some food just in case they don’t like the options that are being served. I will send details on the menu later this week as well.

**In an effort to reimburse the mothers who are so kindly buying and preparing the food for our class, we ask that you send in $3.00 with your child. **

Wednesday, January 30th – HALF WAY DAY!!!

Can you believe it!? In just a little over a week, half of the second grade year will be over and your children will be soaring towards third grade! In celebration of the 90th day of school (Half Way Day) we will partake in a variety of fun and engaging activities working with the fraction ½! This is a great connection to the fractions unit that we will be working on.

Please let me know if you have any questions about all of these exciting events coming up in 2GS!

End of November Update

As I wrapped up Fall conferences last night, I found myself thinking about how lucky I am to have such a wonderful, supportive group of parents to work with this year. As I mentioned to many of you, I look forward to parent-teacher conferences and value the conversations we have during that time. As you process what was discussed and the goals that I have for your children at this point, please be in touch with questions or thoughts.  Remember, the progress-report which you will receive in January, is designed to capture a “moment in time” and your children are making gains and continuing to flourish each day.

Before, I go into detail about what we have been up to in 2GS, I would like to call your attention to a few important dates.

*Mark your calendar*- Wednesday, December 19th at 8:00am , 2GS Winter celebration. Details to follow but this will be a time to celebrate all of the wonderful work your children have accomplished thus far this year.

There are two more early release days- Thursday, December 6th and Wednesday, December 12th. There are movies being shown on both these days. If your child wishes to attend, please be sure to sign-up by the registration deadline.

Lastly, I will be out for professional development on the dates below. I have tried to book Ms. Bankler as the guest teacher for all days in an effort to provide some sense of consistency for your children.

December 11th (all day), December 13th (morning), December 20th (all day).

There were some common themes and questions that came up at conferences. I will try and further address some questions parents had below.

Homework- The Reading Log continues to be the only homework your children have. It seems that some students are becoming lazy with this work. Please help to make sure that your children are putting in good effort each week. Additionally, most reading logs are being turned in without names. I have reminded second graders that this is a part of being a responsible second grader. If you or your child are looking for some more support in including structure in the reading log, I encourage students to write well constructed paragraphs. In 2GS, students have learned that a good paragraph includes a topic sentence (the big idea), three detail sentences that support the topic sentence and a conclusion (a thought, a wish, or a feeling). Additionally, students know how to summarize using this following quick prompt below.

In math we have been working on subtraction. Currently, students are working on the “lock-it-up, break-it-up” strategy. This is one of the many strategies that students will be exposed to in second grade. The goal is to introduce a variety of strategies in hopes that students find at least one that they will carry with them and use for subtracting in every day life. There are many steps in the process, ask your child to teach you what they have learned!

As discussed with many of you at conferences, math games are a great way for students to continue practicing math concepts in a fun and engaging way! The Math Resource Center at our school offers many fun games that you can borrow for periods of time, be sure it check it out! One game that second graders LOVE is Countdown, this game allows students to practice a variety of computation skills as well has the important skill of being flexible when thinking about numbers. If you are looking for a holiday gift for your child, you may want to consider this game.

Have a great weekend and please be in touch with any questions!

Happy Thanksgiving and 2GS Update

We have been working hard in 2GS! It was wonderful to begin conferences this week and I value this time to sit down and discuss your child’s progress thus far. If there is anything in particular that you would like to talk about during these meetings, feel free to let me know ahead of time.

In writing, 2GS has been working hard to write well-constructed paragraphs! Students are using their knowledge of what is included in a well-written sentence and applying this to writing a cohesive paragraph. We talked about that a good paragraph includes a topic sentence (the big idea), three detail sentences that support the topic sentence and a conclusion (a thought, a wish, or a feeling).  I encourage students to practice writing paragraphs using this format each week in their reading logs.

Students have also been writing “seed stories” or small moment stories. Teaching students to zoom into a small moment is one of the first skills I teach during our narrative writing! Students have been working to focus in on a story that takes place over a short period of time- 5 minutes to one hour. Second graders have been surprised to learn that by including dialogue, thought, descriptive language and sensory detail into their writing, they are really able to stretch out a small moment into an exciting story.

In math, students have been exploring multiple strategies for adding both with and without regrouping. Using the “break it up” strategy, students added two digit numbers with and without regrouping. This strategy reinforces student’s understanding of place value and adding larger numbers.

We have also been exploring subtraction. Subtracting always seems more complex for second graders. We took a step back and began exploring two-digit minus one-digit numbers. Second graders often need to be reminded that when they subtract they are always left with less than when they started. This week, we began to explore subtracting 2 two-digit numbers with the help of a hundreds chart.

We have also been digging deep into our soil unit. To start, students thought about what they already know about soil and questions they currently have. We gathered soil samples from around Lawrence Park. We further investigated them- observing, comparing and making observational drawings. Ask your child what they know about the features of soil.

To begin bringing in the Thanksgiving spirits, 2GS began to work on some Thanksgiving themed projects! We read the book Thank You Sarah by Laurie Halse Anderson about a brave women, Sarah Hale, who saved Thanksgiving for our country and fought to make it a national holiday. After reading the book, we talked about the importance of being persistent and fighting for what you believe in. We also discussed what a hero is. 2GS came to the realization that heroes are really not figures such a Superman and Batman but rather real, brave people who do good for others. In thinking of some heroes, 2GS suggested people such as Martin Luther King Jr, Helen Keller, Abraham Lincoln and Susan B Anthony. Then, each child identified who their own personal heroes are and wrote about why they are thankful for this person. Most students wrote about family members or other important people in their lives. Their writing was thoughtfully composed and very touching. We will share them with you next week.

As you may have heard, Lawrence is going screen free next week. I will be observing a screen-free week with the Lawrence community to be more present with colleagues and students during this week of Thanksgiving, and will not be on technology including not checking email from November 18 to November 25. If you have an urgent need to speak to me, please call the main office at 617-879-4300 during school hours.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoys the time with their families. I hope you all know how THANKFUL  I am every day to be your children’s teacher!

2GS Update- 10/21.

With the chill in the air this week, it really feels like Fall is upon us and we are deep into all sorts of rich learning in 2GS! Be sure to read to the bottom of this post for all of the latest updates and happenings.

In math, we have been working on place value and regrouping with place value blocks. Students got initial exposure to adding and subtracting with re-grouping using base-ten blocks. Next week, students will begin to learn how to add and subtract with larger numbers using base-ten blocks. We also learned two new math games this week, Race to 100 and 101 and Out! . Both games help to deepen children’s understanding of place value and regrouping. Ask your child to teach you to play- both games can be played with dice at home!

In Social Studies, students worked in cooperative groups on their continent research projects. They gathered information on their assigned continent, researching geography, weather, animals, plants and other interesting facts. After all of the important information was gathered, each group worked together to make a poster to present to the rest of the class. Next week, students will give a short oral presentation on the continent they became an “expert” on. This is a wonderful project that helps promote a variety of academic skills as well as cooperation, turn taking, and public speaking. Additionally, it is a way for students to learn from their classmates as they assume the role of teacher during their presentation.

During Reading Workshop, we’ve launched our reading groups! During this time, teachers are working with small groups of students who are working on similar reading goals. Each day your child has time to read independently, read with a teacher and engage in meaningful conversation about books. Tomorrow, we will launch our fiction unit and the focus will be on building fluency. At our conferences next month, we will be excited to share the reading goals we have for your child at this point of the school year.

Last week, we began our word study routines. Each week, we will focus on a different spelling pattern and students will engage in a variety of activities to carefully explore their words. The spelling program we will be using this year helps second graders to take ownership over their learning. They will be given a list of 10-12 words and they will choose 6 to study. The words range in length and complexity and students can choose the words “just right” for them. Additionally, we have made individualized sight word lists for each student and these will be added to the weekly words as well. These words will also appear on the back of your child’s homework assignment sheet so that they can be studied at home. While there is no formal homework associated with word study, I will provide a list of suggested activities should you want to study these words with your child at home. There will be a spelling quiz given on Fridays.

Important information and updates

  • School Picture Day- November 6th. Our photos are schedule for 10:30am, after gym class. I will give students time to change should students want to wear an outfit for picture that is not suitable for gym

  • I will be out for professional development- Wednesday, 10/24 and Thursday 11/1

  • Please be sure to place your October book orders as soon as possible!

Below is information on how 2GS will celebrate Halloween

On Wednesday, October 31st 2GS will have a small Halloween Celebration before the K-2 Halloween Parade. We will have some fun with games and activities and I will be looking for a few parent volunteers.

I will send out a sign-up for items that will be needed later this weekend.

As always, your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Halloween Parade Details

  • The parade will take place outside around the track at 2:10pm.

  • If you are planning to watch the parade, please go directly to the field by 2:10 pm by the Fenced-in Playground also known as the “big” playground or by the Kindergarten entrance by the Lawrence garden.

  • Kindergarten, first and second grade classes will parade together.

  • After the parade, your children will return to their classrooms for the remainder of the afternoon and parents can pick up their children at the regular 2:30 pm dismissal time.

Costume Details

  • If your child is going to participate, s/he should BRING his/her costume in a bag. Be sure that it is clearly labeled with your child’s name. The bag should be kept in his/her cubby.

  • Children will change into their costumes before the parade. Your child’s teacher will contact you if additional help is needed.

  • Use your best judgment with costumes, keep in mind that masks can be frightening for many children and weapons are not allowed in school.

  • Please be mindful of the length of your child’s costume as longer costumes often get stepped on.

Thank you for your cooperation!

A great start to October in 2GS!

Greetings! I hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend. We have been busy in 2GS! See below for our latest updates on learning and upcoming events.

During reading workshop, students are working to build their reading stamina. Second graders should be able to choose a book and stick with it for at least 20 minutes. Students are working hard to choose “just right” books. Ask your child the strategies they use to find just right books in the 2GS library! This week we will begin guided reading groups!

In math, we are deeply immersed in place value. Students have learned to recognize the value of each digit in a 2, 3 or 4 digit number, both in isolation and when writing the number in expanded form. It is important for second graders to understand that a number such as 345 is really 300+40+5. Additionally, this week students had the opportunity to explore with base-ten blocks, identifying the value of a group of blocks and comparing the value to other groups using terms such as greater than, less than, and equal to.

Continuing our mapping unit this week, students made their own maps as a follow-up to our reading of Mapping Penny’s World. Each student created their own individual map of a town by following a list of directions. Each map included a title, a key, symbols, and a compass rose. This project allowed students to display all they have learned about map features in the past few weeks. We also moved into our exploration of the continents and our more in-depth study of North America and the places where we live. Students learned about the countries and oceans that surround the United States. We have also begun a project that allows second graders to “zoom in” and explore their country, state, city, town and school locations.

As writers, students continued to be inspired by Oliver Jeffers’ pictures books. It has been amazing to watch students explore his work and then apply it to their own writing in new and creative ways. Students have been working on multiple books about events in their own lives and books that teach others on a particular topic. By looking closely at Oliver Jeffers books, students have added more descriptive language into their writing, powerful words, humor, speech bubbles and much more! As we take a closer look at his illustrations as well, students have chose to include greater detail in their drawings to help tell their story!

News and Updates

  • Later today I will send out an email for Fall conferences
  • I am in the process of brainstorming some ideas for a small Halloween celebration. If you have an idea for a craft or activity that does not involve food, please be in touch!
  • If you have time this week to help sort Scholastic flyers, please let me know. I’d love to get this program up and running. It’s rather simple and can be done in the pleasure of your own home. 🙂
  • New Date for School Pictures: November 6th
  • Both Ms. Demsey and I will be out for Professional Development on Tuesday October 16th and Wednesday October 24th

Off to a great start!

Your children are off to a fabulous start in 2GS! They have quickly embraced our classroom routines and have risen to the expectations of second grade. We spent an adequate amount of time these past couple of weeks getting to know each other and building our classroom community.
A Few Notes about 2G Events and Routines
Star Student of the Day
This year, your child will have multiple opportunities to be the “star student” of the day. This is a very exciting job for second graders! As star student, each member will have the opportunity to lead morning meeting, share an item or story with the class, and lead the class line! Next week, you will receive a star student calendar. For your child’s second (or first in a few cases) experience as star student, your child will be responsible for completing a star student poster. I encourage students to include a lot of detail on the poster, use pictures, and be creative! Posters will go home a few days before you child’s designated day. This poster will act as your child’s sharing and will help further build our classroom community and allow students to connect with one another.
Homework
Second graders are required to read, or be read to, for twenty minutes a night. They should record the title and the date in their reading log. Additional “word study” homework will be given on Thursday nights. Unfinished work will also be sent home when necessary to make sure that all students are completing tasks and keeping up with second grade expectations.   Please help to instill consistent homework routines in your children.
Morning Routines
Your children are extremely independent. Beginning Monday, please say goodbye in the hallway, and allow your child to independently hang up his/her backpack and jacket, hand in his/her folder. Your support will allow us to start our day quickly and smoothly! Thank you!
